CTE & Washington State Legislation
A message from our WA-ACTE Executive Director
As a Career and Technical Education (CTE) professional and educator in Washington you are aware of the pending work in the legislature to “fully fund” education and satisfy the McCleary Court decision that has the legislature still in contempt and receiving a $100,000 per day fine, which is well over $60M dollars to date.
Within the work to fully fund education is the need to improve and revise the funding for CTE programs in our state. Over the last two years (and more) the Washington ACTE and others have been working as a coalition to bring about increased funding for CTE to meet the needs of programs to continue delivering high-quality programs for all students in Washington State.
For the 2017 Legislative Session, which will be focused on additional education funding (upwards of $2.4B) the Washington ACTE and our coalition partners will be working on two major initiatives focused on CTE this year.
Information and resources for greater understanding can be found on the Washington ACTE website.

Have a great winter break with all the best for the holiday season and be prepared to join us in the legislative work in 2017 to advance CTE for all students in Washington.

- To solve the impending Average Annual Full-Time Equivalent (AAFTE) calculation that if not amended will create a 10% overall loss of funding for a total loss of approximately $48M available for CTE programs use.
- Increase overall CTE funding for schools and skills centers for supplies, teacher training, industry partnerships, and equipment.
- At a minimum - $68M additional dollars for the minimum needed to maintain the status quo of today’s actual CTE programing costs.
- To return full funding - $187M total dollars to match the level in the 2011-2013 budget. This will expand CTE opportunities for students; raise the capacity to address the existing skills gap by creating an educational system in a better position to meet the workforce needs of business and industry in Washington State.
